The true potential of AI is realized by making it open and accessible.

Our story

Charles Packer and Sarah Wooders met as PhD students at the Sky Computing Lab at Berkeley, where they shared an advisor. Charles studied reinforcement learning, while Sarah focused on AI and data systems. Despite working in different fields, Sarah and Charles shared an interest in experimenting   with chatbots.  They realized that immersive chatbot experiences benefitted from  extended context windows,  but that the universal constraint of all language models was limited context. How could they manage context –   or, memory  – in a way that enabled agents to be truly useful, and better yet, to gain utility over time?

Packer and Wooders introduced  MemGPT  in a research paper in October 2023, a system that intelligently manages different memory tiers in order to effectively provide extended context within a language model’s limited window. The paper and the open-source project went viral, proving Packer and Wooders’ hypothesis about stateful APIs overtaking stateless builds as the industry evolves.

Our mission

At Letta, we believe that programming agents starts with programming memory. And we’re putting our deep expertise in research, systems, and AI behind building the stateful APIs of the future, starting with memory management. If that sounds like a mission you can get behind, we’d love you to join us!

Open AI and model freedom

The true potential of AI is realized by making it open and accessible. AI systems are more resilient, reliable, and trustworthy when they are built using open technology. The real AI danger is ClosedAI.

Power to the developers

Developers will turn foundation models into the next generation of applications, so they shouldn't be restricted by black-box models and APIs. Rather, they should be empowered to understand and innovate with the underlying technology.

Nimble, talent-dense teams

We believe in small, exceptional teams: one 10x engineer is better than ten 1x engineers.

Flat structure & high trust

We believe in a flat company structure where every employee is trusted to drive their own work. At an early stage startup, your greatest strength against incumbents is your speed of execution - flat teams allow exceptional individuals to move with exceptional velocity.

We
in-person work

Creativity, community, culture, and trust thrive in person. Expect face-to-face meetings in our SF office, group lunches and dinners at the Ferry Building, and walk-and-talk debugging sessions along the beautiful Embarcadero.
